A popular alternative to more traditional kayaks that are made from glass fiber and epoxy (composite) or roto-molded plastic or some other form of hard-shell are inflatable kayaks

Inflatable kayaks offer several advantages over traditional hard-shell kayaks, making them an appealing option for many water enthusiasts. Their versatility allows for use in various water conditions, while their affordability makes them accessible to a wider range of people. In addition, inflatable kayaks are easier to store and transport, as they can be deflated and packed away when not in use. Despite being lightweight, they are designed to be durable, providing long-lasting performance for outdoor adventures.

Portability and Versatility

With hard-shell type kayaks, transportation can be cumbersome and you typically need some type of roof rack for your vehicle or a large vehicle like a pickup truck. An inflatable kayak can easily be deflated, folded, and stored on the back seat or the trunk of a car, and they are easy enough to inflate at your destination with a good-sized air pump. This is an ideal kayak option for those who would like to explore lakes and waterways but have minimal storage space at home. So, a couple or a family can easily pack a couple of inflatable kayaks in their vehicle and still have storage for other items for their trip.

Hard-shell kayaks are typically designed and built for specific types of water activities whereas inflatable kayaks are more versatile. Inflatable kayaks can be used in many different water environments which include lakes, rivers the ocean, and some whitewater. I remember one of my outings entailed paddling down the East Race Waterway (the first artificial white water river course in North America) in South Bend Indiana. The kayak cruised easily over the rapids and was very easy to paddle and navigate. If you’re looking for a kayak that can be used on different types of waterways then choosing an inflatable kayak will be a good choice if you are looking for a single watercraft.
