Kayaking has become one of the most popular water sports and for several good reasons. It provides an exciting way to explore the waterway and outdoors, while also giving you somewhat of a workout. Regardless of what kayak you have, if you put in the time and miles, you will get a good upper-body workout.
With the several types of kayaks that are on the market today, sit-on-top kayaks have become increasingly popular over the years allowing more and more people of all skill levels to get on the water to enjoy this recreational pastime. In this article, I will be focusing on and discussing some of the basics of sit-on-top kayaks, their benefits, and things to consider when purchasing one.
What is a Sit-On-Top Kayak?
A sit-on-top kayak is considered an entry-level kayak that is stable and easy to paddle and great for beginners or those who enjoy the occasional kayak outing every few months or so. Sit-on-top kayaks are where the paddler sits on top of the kayak rather than inside of it. The kayak has an open deck, which makes them very accessible and easy to use, especially for beginners. Because of the open deck, they are easy to get in and out of. They are a very versatile type of watercraft and can be used for a variety of kayaking activities including recreational paddling, fishing, and even playing in small surf, although there is a specific kind of craft for riding and surfing the waves called a wave-ski and one may wonder if the sit-on-top kayak was derived from the wave-ski itself. The kayaks are available for single and tandem paddles and there are even some options for three people, although they are not that common.
